The Language Process of the Concordance-based Cloze Test: Bridging a Theoretical Gap between Language Testing and Second Language Acquisition

Over the past two decades, concordance-based cloze tests have rarely been researched. This paper makes some theoretical considerations concerning the cloze item type in terms of how language processes involved. The process proposed is based on Oller’s (1979) notion of pragmatic expectancy grammar, Sinclair’s (1991) idiom principle, and Hoey’s (2005) proposal of lexical priming, and uses Nation’s (2001) learning-burden model to categorizie the components of the tested word knowledge. Overall, the theoretical models underlying the item type may represent a convergence of language testing and second language acquisition, where practices in language teaching and learning will be driven by empirical language-corpus data.
